about

These 11 variations were written for Nat Parke and Allen Shawn, using natural harmonics and extended techniques on the cello. The piano starts in equal temperament, but as more notes are added, it transforms itself into a pseudo-gamelan, with detunings and swerving tempos, while each note of the piano has a doubled note that is prepared with screws, tubes, and dimes. The variations are relentlessly in D major--sorta--but are counterbalanced by harmonies a tritone away. These harmonic and timbral doppelgangers are also heard in the odd doublings of the cello in the piano, as well as in the climax of the piece, inspired by the slowest tempo in gamelan, called rangkap (loosely translated as “double”). Here the tune transcends to a raucously slow and highly ornamented plane.
